Penn State report card vs. UCLA

PASADENA, Calif. – Grading the Penn State football team on its 42-37 loss to UCLA Saturday at the Rose Bowl:

Quarterback

A: Drew Allar accounted for 278 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover in perhaps his best game of the season.

Running backs

B: Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton combined for 113 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns on 22 touches.

Receivers

B: Kyron Hudson and the tight ends were productive, but Luke Reynolds lost a fumble and had a late pass go off his hands in the end zone.

Offensive linemen

C: They did a better job in pass protection but they committed two false starts in the fourth quarter and missed several blocks.

Defensive linemen

D: They combined for two sacks and another tackle for a loss, but UCLA rushed for 269 yards and couldn’t contain Nico Iamaleava.

Linebackers

D: Amare Campbell was very active again with 10 tackles, including 2.5 in the backfield, but Dominic DeLuca had trouble chasing and tackling Iamaleava.

Defensive backs

D: They gave up a couple long completions in the first half and missed several tackles.

Special teams

C: Oregon caught Penn State napping on an onside kick in the first quarter. On the flip side, Dani Dennis-Sutton blocked a punt that was returned for a TD.

Coaches

F: At least two Penn State players said they weren’t mentally ready to face a prohibitive underdog, which led to the shocking loss. That’s on James Franklin and his coaching staff.
