Philadelphia Union soccer player Quinn Sullivan announces torn ACL

Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan announced on social media Monday that he has torn his ACL.

Sullivan exited Saturday’s game at D.C. United in the 12th minute. He appeared to first go down in a challenge with another player, then tried to continue on several times before being withdrawn.

His season ends with two games remaining in the regular season. He has started 24 games this season and appeared in all 28 for which he was available.

“I am gutted to not be able to finish this incredible season with the guys, but really proud to be a part of this team,” Sullivan wrote. “I have full confidence that this special group will lift a trophy.”

The Union lead MLS and can clinch the Supporters’ Shield with results over the next two weeks. It would be the club’s second trophy.

Sullivan has two goals and nine assists this season in 1,967 minutes, down slightly from the five goals and 11 assists he posted a season ago, though his role had changed somewhat in Bradley Carnell’s new system. The 21-year-old Homegrown has 12 career MLS goals and 21 assists in 122 appearances (61 starts).

Sullivan was called into the U.S. national team camp in late May for a pair of friendlies before the Gold Cup. He made his U.S. debut against Turkey and also played as a sub against Switzerland. He made the Gold Cup roster and logged one appearance, getting 70 minutes against Haiti.

Sullivan’s ACL tear is just the second in club history, combined with one in the 2024 preseason to defender Isaiah LeFlore, a shockingly low incidence for such a common soccer injury.
