Police: 16-year-old girl suffers life-threatening injuries in moped crash on Route 15

A 16-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries when she was thrown from a moped that crashed on Route 15 in New Canaan on Monday.

Troopers responded to Route 15 South at the Exit 13 off-ramp after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a crash involving a moped just before 1:30 p.m., according to Connecticut State Police.

A preliminary investigation found that the moped was being driven south by a 17-year-old New Haven boy. As the bike approached the exit, the teen reportedly merged into the exit lane and lost control, crashing the moped and leading to the girl being thrown from the bike, according to state police.

The girl, who police said was from New Haven, was taken in an ambulance to Norwalk Hospital, state police said. She was later transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital for a high level of care. Her condition was not immediately clear.

The southbound side of Route 15 was closed for more than three hours while crews were at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the state police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad.

Drivers who were in the area with dashboard camera footage or anyone with information have been asked to contact Trooper First Class Jonathan Elterich at 203-696-2500 or Jonathan.Elterich@ct.gov.
