Police conducting traffic enforcement for first day of school allegedly find man with narcotics

A man was arrested Wednesday when police conducting traffic enforcement for the first day of school in Willimantic allegedly found him with suspected fentanyl, cocaine and crack cocaine in a vehicle.

The traffic stop was carried out on Bridge Street near the ACT Magnet School on Main Street around 11:40 a.m. after an officer reportedly saw the driver committing moving violations, according to the Willimantic Police Department.

During the stop, police said they found that a passenger, identified as 49-year-old Jewel Danyel Hurt, was allegedly in “possession of a significant amount of narcotics.” According to police, Hurt resisted and fought with officers as tried to take him into custody.

Police said Hurt was found to have 80 bags of suspected purple fentanyl, three grams of suspected crack cocaine and  one gram of suspected cocaine. He faces three counts of possession of a controlled substance and a single count each of use of drug paraphernalia, possession with intent to sell or dispense narcotics and interfering with an officer/resisting arrest.

Hurt was held on a $150,000 bond and was expected to appear in Danielson Superior Court on Thursday.
