Police ID 19-year-old killed in Hampton shooting after altercation

HAMPTON — Police have identified a 19-year-old who died in a shooting that also wounded a 17-year-old Monday evening.

Kyree Staton, a Norfolk resident, died in the shooting in the first block of Sacramento Drive. When officers arrived at the scene after 7:30 p.m., off North Armistead Avenue near Luther W. Machen Elementary School, they found two people who had life-threatening injuries: Staton and a 17-year-old boy.

Staton was pronounced dead at the scene and the 17-year-old was taken to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition, according to a release.

An investigation revealed Staton and the teen were known to one another and had arranged to meet prior to the shooting, according to police. The circumstances around the meeting suggest “possible narcotics-related overtones,” police said. During the meeting, an altercation ensued, which escalated into an exchange of gunfire, according to the release.

The investigation is ongoing and no other information has been released.
