The Hampton Police Division identified a man who died after an altercation at gas pumps at a 7-Eleven escalated into a shooting Wednesday evening.

Terry Hilton Jr., a 28-year-old from Hampton, died following a shooting after 5:40 p.m. at the gas station in the 1st block of East Mercury Boulevard.

When officers arrived, Hilton was found with life-threatening gunshot wounds. He later died at the hospital, according to a release. An altercation occurred between Hilton and the suspect at the gas pumps, which escalated into an exchange of gunfire, according to police. Hilton was struck multiple times and the suspect left the scene in a vehicle, according to the release.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation. No other details have been released.
