Police ID Hampton man found dead after food delivery driver shot man trying to rob him

HAMPTON — Police identified a man who was found dead last week.

Early on Aug. 29, the body of 35-year-old Anthony Clark, of Hampton, was found on Sargeant Street. Police said they found him after a “suspicious vehicle” was reported in the area, across Old Buckroe Road from Marion Road and a short distance from the site of an attempted robbery reported earlier that night.

A driver for a restaurant food delivery service shot an armed man who was trying to rob him, the Hampton Police Division said. Police investigators are still trying to determine whether the two cases are linked.

Police got a 911 call about 12:50 a.m. about an exchange of gunfire following a robbery attempt in the 400 block of Marion Road, Hampton police spokesman Cpl. Shaun Stalnaker said in a news release.

The delivery driver told police he was returning to his car when he was approached by a man brandishing a gun. The driver “produced his own firearm, and an exchange of gunfire ensued,” Stalnaker wrote.

The man ran from the scene after being shot.

Stalnaker said Hampton detectives are investigating whether the two incidents are related.
