Police make arrest in fatal hit-and-run crash involving pedestrian in Bethel

Police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal hit-and-runn crash involving a pedestrian in Bethel in September.

Andrew Hitchcock, 65, faces one count of evading responsibility in a fatal crash following his arrest on Dec. 6, the Bethel Police Department said in a statement late Monday.

The charge stems from a crash on Sept. 22 shortly after 8 p.m. when officers responded to a report of an injured man on the side of Nashville Road, police said. At the time, police said he was breathing but was unresponsive. The crash victim has not been publicly identified.

According to police, officers quickly found that the victim had been hit by a vehicle heading north and that the driver had taken off. Patrol officers as well as the police department’s Accident Reconstruction Team canvassed the area and were able to get a description of the vehicle.

The next day while officers were conducting another canvass, they found a vehicle matching the description of the one believed to be involved, according to police. The vehicle had damage and marks consistent with the crash, police said.

Investigators seized the vehicle and obtained a search warrant, which led to “further testing” that allegedly confirmed it was involved in the crash, according to police. The investigation then led to police obtaining a warrant charging Hitchcock, the owner of the vehicle.

According to court records, Hitchcock is free on a $75,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on Tuesday.
