Police make arrest in sexual assault of woman jogging in CT park

Police have arrested a man in connection with a sexual assault at a park in New Haven last month involving a woman who was out for a run when she was attacked by a man with a box cutter.

Ludvi Carias-Interiano, 34, of West Haven was arrested on Thursday morning on charges of first-degree aggravated sexual assault and first-degree unlawful restraint, according to the New Haven Police Department.

Police said Carias-Interiano was charged in connection with an incident on Aug. 9 in a wooded area of Fort Hale Park where a woman was jogging in the morning hours when a man with a box cutter allegedly attacked her.

The victim was taken to a hospital for medical treatment following the attack.

According to police, Det. Samantha Romano of the Special Victim’s Unit was assigned the case and obtained a warrant for Carias-Interiano’s arrest.

Carias-Interiano was taken into custody at his residence and held on $750,000 bond, police said.

“I would first like to extend our support to the victim of this heinous attack,” Assistant Chief David Zannelli, who oversees the Investigative Services Division, said in a statement. “She has been extremely courageous during this ordeal as our detectives worked tirelessly to identify and locate the suspect.

“This was fantastic police work, and I cannot speak highly enough of the work done by Det. Samantha Romano, her supervisor Sgt. Cherelle Carr and the entire Special Victim’s Unit,” Zannelli said. “I would also like to thank our federal partners, the State’s Attorney’s Office, the State Forensic Laboratory, along with the Plano Police Department in Texas.”

Police were expected to provide additional information about the arrest at a news briefing on Friday morning at the police department.
