Poquoson High had a great day at the Class 2 state cross country meet at Green Hill Park in Salem on Saturday.
Poquoson senior Elizabeth Trant ran a 5-kilometer time of 18 minutes, 40.10 seconds to win the individual title by nearly a minute. She helped the Islanders finish fifth overall, then rode to the Charlottesville area to contribute a goal and an assist as Poquoson win a field hockey semifinal 3-0 at Western Albemarle.
Appomattox County’s Elly Nash was second in Class 2 at 19:33.1.
Poquoson had 128 points, and 11th-place Bruton had 295. Floyd County (60) and Clarke County (67) were the top two.
In the boys race, Poquoson’s Jacob Wines ran 16:25.90 to finish fourth.
Poquoson (205) and Bruton (260) placed 10th and 12th, respectively. Glenvar (80) was first and Clarke County (91) second.
Nottoway’s Bradley Hamilton won the boys medal in 15:45.9. Bruton was led by 46th-place Lucas Johnson at 18:12.5.
In Class 3, Tabb freshman Hillary Opdyke finished 25th in the girls race. William Monroe’s Samantha Nitzsche raced to first place in 17:28.6. Kimaya Stephens paced York, taking 41st in 21:00.2.
Spotswood (87) edged Christiansburg (88) and Fauquier (91) for the team trophy. New Kent (257) was ninth, Tabb (267) 11th and York (274) 12th.
In the boys race, York senior Gavin West was the top area finisher, taking 25th. Tabb’s Kody Lowery placed 39th in 17:00.4.
Lord Botetourt’s Ethan Thorne won the individual championship at 15:08.8.
Western Albemarle took the team title with 50 points, followed by Rockbridge County (89). The three Bay Rivers District/Region A teams in the field, Tabb (249), New Kent (268) and York (317), placed 10th through 12th.
Rambo chooses Georgia
Grassfield High star sprinter Sophie Rambo committed to Georgia. She chose the Bulldogs over Southern California, Florida and Tennessee.
Rambo was The Virginian-Pilot/Daily Press 2023-24 Female Athlete of the Year. She has won nine individual state titles in her career.
Last season, she had the fastest time in the state in the 100 meters (11.49 seconds), 200 (23.49) and 400 (52.47). She also was ranked 10th nationally in the 400.
During the indoor season, she finished the season ranked first nationally in the 500 meters (1:12.04) and seventh in the 300 (37.84) She also finished second in the 400 at the New Balance Nationals Indoor Meet in Boston. Her time of 53.31 was the second-fastest in the nation last indoor season.
