The Orlando Pride managed to rescue a late draw in a 1-1 matchup against the Houston Dash last weekend, and they are now back home after a three-game trip and looking to secure a spot in the playoffs.
Orlando (9-8-6, 33 points) takes on the Portland Thorns (9-7-7, 34 points) on Friday night at 8 p.m.
“It’s going to be an exciting game. Both teams ultimately need to win to put themselves in good positions to continue to move up the table,” Orlando coach Seb Hines said. “For ourselves, it’s been a long, long time since we’ve played at home in front of our own fans, so we’re looking to put an exciting show on for them and come away with three points.”
With only three games left in the regular season, Orlando sits in sixth place in the standings. A win would not guarantee playoffs, but it would help put distance between the Pride and the teams hunting them down.
They face a Portland side that has not kept a clean sheet in 10 matches, an encouraging statistic for an Orlando side that has struggled to score goals. The Pride are averaging 1.22 goals per game, a rate only better than four other teams in the league. They will need to find a solution to that problem, and Portland presents an excellent chance to get the offense back on track.
“I do think we’ve created more chances than we did last year. I do think it has come down to those margins of whether we’re getting the final touch or the defenders getting the final touch,” Hines added. “So we just have to continue the process. We have to continue the upward trajectory that we started back in 2023, and if we continue this process, we will be winning more games, moving up the table, and feeling more confident going into each and every game.”
Orlando’s defense is among the best in the NWSL, allowing a third-best average of one goal a game. Portland has scored six goals in the past five games, and the Thorns have scored in 9 of 10 matches in Orlando since the Pride joined the league in 2016. Orlando will need to be at its best defensively to keep its second-ever clean sheet at home against their West Coast foes.
