Pride fall 1-0 at home to North Carolina

The Orlando Pride desperately needed a victory, and for most of Friday’s NWSL home match against the North Carolina Courage, they looked likely to finally get one.

Instead, a late goal gave eighth-place North Carolina (7-7-7, 28 points) a 1-0 victory and extended Orlando’s winless run in league play to nine games, leaving the seventh-place Pride (8-8-5, 29 points) in danger of missing the playoffs.

“Disappointed in the result, but not the performance. Between the two halves, I thought we put some really good pressure on, forcing a lot of turnovers, a lot of errors,” Orlando coach Seb Hines said. “I sound like a broken record, but it’s fine margins again. We were so close to scoring, but [North Carolina] cleared two goals off the line, and it’s just not meant to be right now.”

Neither team could break the deadlock in the first half, with only one shot on target apiece. There was plenty of fight in the midfield, but the Pride could not find a way to break into the final third and threaten goalkeeper Marisa Jordan.

The game opened up in the second half, and the Courage finally broke through in the 89th minute. Orlando goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse was pulled away from her spot to make a save, leaving her unable to get back in time to stop Shinomi Koyama from getting on the end of the loose ball and scoring her first NWSL goal.

Ten minutes of stoppage time gave the Pride a chance to score an equalizer. But even bringing up Moorhouse for a free kick was not enough to help the Pride snap their slide.

“We keep believing because we have a really good team, really good roster. We’ve been unlucky, obviously, these past few games,” Orlando midfielder Angelina added. “But like I said, we take it game by game and next game we’re going to be totally focused on that one to get the win.”

Orlando travels to San Diego next week with another chance to get back to winning ways.
