Quarterback Colton Joseph sparked an unstoppable ground attack with a career-best rushing performance, and Old Dominion continued its dominant Sun Belt Conference play this month with a 45-10 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday in Statesboro, Georgia.
Joseph finished with 189 of the Monarchs’ 376 rushing yards and added a rushing touchdown and passing touchdown along with 140 yards through the air in three quarters of play. Head coach Ricky Rahne replaced Joseph with backup Quinn Henicle late in the third quarter, with his team ahead 45-3.
ODU (8-3, 5-2) has won four straight games, including its past three by a combined 109-16 score.
After shutting out Troy in its last game, the Monarchs’ defense stood strong again Saturday. It limited Georgia Southern (5-6, 3-4) to 22 rushing yards until its final drive, when it tacked on another 27 yards and its only touchdown with 29 seconds left.
Running backs Trequan Jones (73 yards on 14 carries), Devin Roche (51 yards and a TD on seven carries) and Ke’Travion Hargrove (40 yards and three TDs on 10 carries) all made significant contributions to ODU’s ground game.
Jailen Butler caught the Monarchs’ lone touchdown pass, a 16-yarder from Joseph in the second quarter.
ODU outgained Georgia Southern 555-257 in total offense and punted only twice.
The Monarchs will close out their regular season at home next Saturday against Georgia State at 2 p.m.
