Readers speak: A huge winter storm resets our priorities

We are worried about losing power, losing heat.  The roads are relatively impassable, so we sit at home, with our families watching the majesty of nature, thankful for the simple things.

My wife made a huge pot of soup to help keep us warm, my son created a path with a snowblower so that our dogs could romp in the snow.

My grandchildren played on the “mountains” of snow the plow had created, sledding down the hill.

One of my granddaughters came in the house to warm up for a moment.  She was about to make an igloo.

I was instantly transported to when I was her age. One of my favorite memories was getting together with a few neighborhood kids and building — an igloo!  We frolicked in that frozen igloo for hours, unfazed by the cold. I shared that memory with her.

The storm created some inconvenience, but it also opened our eyes to the majesty of nature, and created an opportunity to enjoy the simple things we sometimes overlook.

I’ve always felt that you can look for the best and the worst in some situations, and you’ll find them both.  Why not look for the best?

Here’s to igloos and family.
