Readers speak: Keep up the good work, Senator Murphy. You are standing up for justice.

I was astonished to read the letter to the editor on January 27 criticizing Senator Chris Murphy for attempting to enter an ICE facility in Texas recently  (“Connecticut deserves better from our elected representatives“).

The writer accused Murphy of violating “rules, regulations, and the law” to advance a liberal political agenda. He characterized Murphy’s effort as an attention-getting “gambit.”

I, for one, applaud Senator Murphy’s efforts to shed light on ICE’s actions.  Over the past year, millions of Americans of every political persuasion have expressed their outrage about the shocking ICE actions that we read about and see on almost a daily basis.

We are heartbroken that our federal government has created a heavily armed and masked secret police force that routinely deprives people of their constitutional rights, grabbing them at their work site, at shopping areas, and outside of schools.

We read about people sent to detention centers without due process. We hear the stories of innocent people deported to prisons in foreign countries, where many are tortured and killed.  And now, in the last few weeks, we’ve watched in horror as protesters in Minneapolis, exercising their constitutional right to protest these injustices, have been killed.

So, I say keep up the good work, Senator Murphy. Stand up for justice and do whatever it takes to stop our country from continuing down the road towards becoming a brutal, inhumane dictatorship.
