Readers speak: Let’s be nice. Even when we talk CT tax burden.

First, opinion: We should stop letting our political views get in the way of basic friendship and respect for our fellow citizens. Also, stop stating opinion as fact.

Second, fact: In response to the recent letter extolling the accomplishments of the state Democrats on taxes, let’s look at the data. If you looked up the correlation between total tax burden and party control in 2025 you will find the seven highest tax burden states are all controlled by Democrats and the five lowest tax burden states are all controlled by Republicans. So where do you get the idea that the Democrats are for low taxes?

Here’s the breakdown, the top seven states for lowest tax burden in order are, Alaska, New Hampshire, Wyoming, Florida, Tennessee, Delaware, South Dakota and all are Republican controlled in 2025. That is the legislative control, governor party and state control are all Republican. New Hampshire is split.

The six highest tax burden states in order are New York, Hawaii, Vermont, Maine, California, Connecticut and are all Democrat controlled. Also note it’s not climate-related, look at the difference between New Hampshire and Connecticut.

The icing on the cake: Connecticut and New Jersey have the highest per capita debt at around $20,000. Think about how much you are paying in your taxes just to service that debt.
