COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Trequan Jones, one of Old Dominion’s top running backs, plans to enter the transfer portal, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported, citing a source. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

The 5-foot-9, 183-pound Jones averaged 7.5 yards per carry this season and had 792 rushing yards and six TDs. He played two years for Georgia Military College before coming to the Monarchs. He joins starting quarterback Colton Joseph in the portal after ODU’s 10-3 season.

UVA’s Jódar goes 2-1 at Next Gen Finals

Virginia sophomore Rafael Jódar went 2-1 at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, though he barely missed qualifying for the semifinals via a “games-won percentage” tiebreaker. He was part of a tournament with eight of the top 20-and-under players in the world.

Jódar went 2-1 in pool play in a tournament with short sets and best-of-five-set matches, defeating childhood friend/fellow Spaniard Martin Landaluce 4-3 (9-7), 4-1, 4-3 (7-2) Friday. At that stage, the only thing that could have eliminated Jódar was a four-set win by Learner Tien over Nicolai Budkov Kjaer — but that’s exactly what happened, 3-4 (2-7), 4-1, 4-2, 4-2.

Tien, Budkov Kjaer and Jódar tied with 2-1 match records. Tien had the best record in sets among the three (8-5), giving him first place in the group. Budkov Kjaer’s record in games was better than Jódar’s, 37-34 to 35-36.
