Rick Armstrong’s 5 high school football games to watch in the Aurora-Elgin area and Week 9 predictions

Batavia, Bolingbrook, West Aurora, Aurora Central Catholic and Kaneland are picks to click for Week 9.

Batavia (6-2, 5-1) at Wheaton Warrenville South (6-2, 5-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday.

Matchup breakdown: A share of the DuKane Conference title will be at stake when the Bulldogs and Tigers meet.

St. Charles North (7-1, 5-1) also plays at Lake Park (3-5, 1-5) with a chance to claim a share of the title with a win.

Last season, Geneva joined Batavia and Wheaton Warrenville South in a three-way tie for the conference championship.

Batavia’s defense, led by senior linebackers Tony Minnec (67 tackles) and Nick Jansey (57 tackles), will look to contain Wheaton Warrenville South running back Owen Yorke, who broke out two weeks ago with 285 yards rushing in a 33-7 win over St. Charles North.

Yorkville (7-1, 3-1) at Bolingbrook (6-2, 3-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday.

Matchup breakdown: The Foxes need a win on the road to earn their second Southwest Prairie West title in three years. Yorkville has allowed just 99 points, an average of 12.4 a game.

Last week, junior linebacker Dillon Viscogliosi and senior linebacker Caleb Viscogliori combined for 20 and 15 tackles, respectively, in a 21-13 win over Plainfield North.

The Raiders have caught fire since starting the season 1-2, winning five straight games and outscoring their opposition 230-41 in that span.

X-factor: Bryce Baxa, Yorkville, sophomore, defensive lineman.

West Aurora (6-2, 4-1) at Streamwood (3-5, 2-3)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday.

Matchup breakdown: The Blackhawks’ defense, led by senior linebackers Kellen Younie and Will Gray along with junior linebacker Darius Stewart, will be looking to contain the Sabres’ triple-option running attack.

“The goal is to get one more win and let’s get a home game and go make a run in Class 8A,” West Aurora coach Nate Eimer said. “Hopefully we can get a good draw.”

Senior quarterback Mason Atkins completed passes to six different receivers last week in a 46-7 win over crosstown rival East Aurora, with four going for touchdowns to seniors Zach Toma and Lesroy Tittle and juniors Brendon Salach and Bryce Riley.

Fisher (1-7) at Aurora Central Catholic (6-2)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday.

Matchup breakdown: The Chargers should be ready to go after having to forfeit last week’s game with at least seven starters — included the entire offensive line and senior quarterback Grant Bohr — unable to play due to an illness.

“Everyone is doing well and we should be good to go,” said ACC coach Christian Rago, noting the visiting Bunnies will be more of a challenge than their record would indicate.

Fisher’s conference is the Heart of Central Illinois (Small).

“It includes some traditionally strong teams like LeRoy and Central A&M,” Rago said. “They’re a big, physical team.”

The Chargers, who haven’t made the playoffs since 2016, will gather at Ach-N-Lou’s Pizza Pub in Aurora to watch the Illinois High School Association’s playoff pairings show on TV.

Belleville Althoff (4-4) at Kaneland (6-2)

Kickoff: 6 p.m. Friday.

Matchup breakdown: Belleville Althoff makes the long trek north to complete the home-and-home series with the Knights needing a win to make the playoffs.

Kaneland dropped a 14-10 decision last season to the Crusaders, who featured three Division I players on their roster on the way to a perfect season and the Class 1A state title, the fourth in program history.

Senior quarterback Jalen Carter and junior kicker Noah McKittrick led the heroics last week as Kaneland rallied to top LaSalle-Peru 23-21 on McKittrick’s 32-yard field goal with 1.7 seconds left.

That win clinched a playoff berth for the Knights.

Carter used his arm and legs to drive the team over the final 30 seconds for the winning kick.
