Search called off for person missing in Quinnipiac River

Crews have suspended the search for a person who went missing in the Quinnipiac River in New Haven late Thursday.

Emergency crews responded to a portion of the river off of Middletown Avenue just after 8:30 p.m. after receiving the report that someone was in the water in distress, according to the New Haven Fire Department.

The department deployed two boats to search the area with sonar, fire officials said. The New Haven Police Department used a drone to assist in the search, according to fire officials.

Because of the direction of the flowing currents, the North Haven Fire Department also deployed a boat to help in the search.

Fire officials said the extensive search of the area was called off late Thursday and resumed around 4 a.m. during low tide. As of about 7:30 a.m., crews had not located the missing individual and had ended the search.
