Shutout puts CNU in C2C final at home

Top-seeded Christopher Newport, hosting the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference’s six-team championship tournament, defeated fourth-seeded UC Santa Cruz 2-0 Friday to advance to Sunday’s final despite being outshot 20-12. Hayden Dewey made four saves for a shutout.

Carson Friedlein scored in the 11th minute, getting assists from Drew McWhinney and Caleb Jones off a play that begin with a corner kick. Jones then bounced in a long free kick from near the left sideline in the 63rd minute. The Banana Slugs’ year ended at 10-7-1.

The Captains (11-2-5), ranked 22nd in NCAA Division III, will compete for the trophy against the victor of Friday’s late semifinal between No. 2 Mary Washington and No. 3 Salisbury. The Sea Gulls beat No. 6 Warren Wilson 3-2 Thursday night.

ODU forward, Grafton grad on Sun Belt second team

The All-Sun Belt second team included Old Dominion forward Lewis Rourke and Kentucky forward Isaiah Chisolm, a Grafton High graduate who has starred for Lionsbridge FC. Rourke has eight goals and three assists for the Monarchs (5-5-7), who got the seventh seed in the conference tournament and will play at No. 2 West Virginia at 3 p.m. Sunday in a quarterfinal. Kentucky (10-2-4) is the top seed.

CNU reaches conference final

Top-seeded CNU shut out tournament host Salisbury 1-0 Friday to advance to the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference final.

Two-time C2C Offensive Player of the Year Hanna Heaton, from Gloucester, scored by bending a free kick around the wall beyond a diving goalkeeper in the 25th minute from 23 yards on the left side. It was her eighth goal of the season.

The Captains (13-1-3), ranked 14th in Division III, outshot Salisbury 22-5. They will play Sunday against UC Santa Cruz for the title, then will learn their NCAA pairing at 11 a.m. Monday on NCAA.com. The Sea Gulls finished 6-11-5.

In the second semifinal, UC Santa Cruz shut out Mary Washington 1-0 on Camille Anneet’s penalty kick in the eighth minute.

Stanford repels UVA in ACC semifinal

Top-seeded Stanford grabbed a three-goal lead in the first half and won 3-2 Thursday night over Virginia in an ACC Tournament semifinal in Cary, North Carolina.

The Cavaliers, seeded fifth in the tournament and ranked seventh in the nation, replied on a goal by Meredith McDermott in the 58th minute and a Maggie Cagle penalty kick in the 85th to pull to 3-2, but Stanford held on. Ella Carter’s pass set up McDermott’s goal.
UVA’s Victoria Safradin made seven saves, six in the first half.

In the other semifinal in Cary, second-seeded Notre Dame ousted third-seeded Duke 2-1. The Cardinal and Irish will play for the NCAA title at noon Sunday on ESPNU. The Cavaliers will learn their NCAA Tournament pairing at 4 p.m. Monday in the selection show on NCAA.com.

Nets’ Thomas out 3-4 weeks with hamstring strain

Chesapeake native Cam Thomas, who leads the Brooklyn Nets (1-7) with 21.4 points per game, will miss at least three to four weeks with a left hamstring strain.

Thomas, 24, a former Oscar Smith High, Oak Hill Academy and LSU star who’s in his fifth NBA season, suffered the injury Wednesday in a 112-103 victory over Indiana.

UConn bounces ODU in Big East semifinal

Connecticut ended Old Dominion’s season with a 4-1 victory over the Monarchs (8-10) in a Big East semifinal Friday on Liberty’s artificial turf in Lynchburg.

With second-seeded UConn ahead 1-0, third-seeded ODU’s Sian Emslie tied the score with a goal in the 24th minute. But the Huskies’ Pien Prins replied with her second goal of the day, just before halftime, and the Huskies got goals from Fien Hollander in the 38th minute and Abby Davidson in the 50th.

UConn will play for the title at 1 p.m. Sunday against top-seeded Liberty, which handled No. 4 Villanova 3-1.

UNC downs UVA for ACC trophy

Top-seeded North Carolina (19-1) beat second-seeded Virginia 4-1 on Louisville’s field for the ACC Tournament championship.

Mia Abello scored on a penalty stroke for UVA (16-2) in the 24th minute, but by then the Tar Heels led 3-0. Dani Mendez had two goals and an assist.

The teams will learn their pairings in the 18-team NCAA bracket at 10 p.m. Sunday on NCAA.com.

ODU reveals schedule with 33 home games

Old Dominion revealed its schedule for 2026, its first season in a refurbished ballpark. The Monarchs will play 33 home games at the Ellmer Family Baseball Complex on TowneBank Field.

Coach Chris Finwood said ODU will play 12 games against teams that made 2025 NCAA regionals. The Monarchs, who didn’t play any games on their campus last season, will start the year with a Feb. 13-15 home series against Quinnipiac.

Area players compete in Conference Masters

Several players from area schools went to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Conference Masters, a last-chance qualifier for the NCAA individual championships later in November. One entry per conference was the norm.

In men’s singles, Old Dominion’s Zechariah Hamrouni won 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 against Belmont’s Sabi Roi before falling 6-3, 6-3 against Elon’s Veljko Krstic.

In men’s doubles, Hamrouni and Yanis Moundir edged Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) to move to a second-round match against NC State.

In women’s singles, ODU’s Victoria Matasova won 6-2, 6-1 against Murray State’s Valeria Chaikovskaia before losing 6-1, 6-4 to Charlotte’s Ni Xi.

Norfolk State’s Yuliya Yurkova lost 6-4, 6-3 to Lehigh’s Maggie Forkner in the first round.

In women’s doubles, William & Mary’s Tilda Larsson and Francesca Davis won 6-2, 6-2 versus a Youngstown State pair but lost 6-1, 6-3 to Xavier. ODU’s Ulyana Romanova and Lidiia Rasskouskaia won 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) against Quinnipiac but fell 6-2, 6-4 to Ohio State.
