East River’s back-to-back state champion girls bowlers are in the same spot as the past two years — on top after the qualifying rounds.
The Falcons averaged just under 200 per bowler in four games on Wednesday at Orlando’s Boardwalk Bowl to earn the top seed for the 16-team championship bracket, which culminates with finals on Thursday. East River’s 3,973 total was more than 100 pins ahead of second-place Bell Creek.
Three East River girls qualified for the 16-player individual bracket. Jada Vidal rolled 875 for the second seed, Larielle Tharps totaled 862 for third, and Emily Marmolejo shot 792 for the 12th seed.
South Lake placed 16th by one pin over Flagler Palm Coast as the second Orlando area team to advance to match play.
On the boys side the undefeated South Lake squad continued its roll, averaging more than 216 per bowler to lead the pack with a 4,322 total. Windermere took third with 4,137, and seventh-place Orange City University and ninth-place Hagerty also stayed alive.
Brody Carter of South Lake was the top local boy with a 954 series for third place. Hagerty’s Kaleb Jimenez and University’s Nathan Tillis tied for seventh at 893. East River’s Shelby Davis also advanced in 12th place with 877.

Girls golf
Lake Nona sophomore Sophia MacApagal went the extra miles to play a huge role in the Lions’ 3A District 6 tournament win on Monday. She played a weekend junior tournament in Mexico but took a red-eye flight back to Orlando on Sunday night, arriving around 5:45 a.m. to tee off for the high school event. She shot 1-under-par 71 at Royal St. Cloud to help reigning state champ Lake Nona win with a 288 total ahead of St. Cloud’s 296, which set an Osceola County record.
Alexandra Snyder, who was the 3A individual state champ as a Lake Nona ninth-grader last year, shot 67 to win the district title. Briel Royce shot 70 for the Lions.
Madison Malaret (71) and Phah Smitasin (72) led the way for Winter Park in winning 3A-5 with a 301 total at Legends Golf Course at Orange Lake Resort.
Lake Mary totaled 322 at Twin Rivers to win 3A-4.
Bishop Moore carded a 344 to win 2A-6 at The Country Club of Mount Dora.

Boys golf
Bishop Moore sophomore Jack Mokris set a school record with an 8-under-par 62 score in the 2A District 6 tournament at the Country Club of Mt. Dora. The Hornets set another program record with their 271 team total.
St. Cloud’s boys broke a school and county record with a 14-under 274 team score in 3A-6 at Royal St. Cloud. Ayden Febres (66) and Nick Lehto (67) led the Bulldogs on the par-72, 6,702-yard course. Lake Mary was third at 300.

The First Academy totaled 12-under 276 to win the loaded 1A-7 tournament at Providence Golf Club. Circle Christian was second at 282, followed by Lake Highland Prep (288) and Lake Mary Prep (294). TFA’s Joshua Castellanos tallied a 5-under 67. His teammate, Mingbo Jiang, tied for second with Wensheng Liu of Lake Mary Prep at 68.
Nathan Erickson (TFA) and Circle Christian teammates Luke Gossett and Orlando Torres shot 69.
Winter Park shot 296 to win 3A-5 at Stoneybrook West.
Lake Mary shot 307 at Twin Rivers to win 3A District 4.
The 1A-6 tournament was rained out Monday and will be played Thursday at Stoneybrook Golf Club. That includes Montverde Academy and Windermere Prep.

Oviedo’s boys finished second to Miami powerhouse Belen Jesuit and was the top 4A squad in the 5K Pre-State Meet, run in conjunction with the college FSU Invitational in Tallahassee. Colin Aysun was fourth individually for the Lions.

Bishop Moore ninth-grader Annabella Tomasic beat the field in the Pre-State meet with a 17:29.3 time for her fourth title in four races this year. The Hornets finished eighth as a team in the Elite race.

Montverde Academy swept the team titles in a strong 1A District 5 meet with its boys piling up 551 points ahead of Lake Highland Prep (383). It was the Eagles’ seventh consecutive district crown.
The Montverde girls scored 449 ahead of Foundation Academy (355).
Trinity Prep swept the 1A-4 boys and girls titles. Jahan Patel, a Saints junior, won his two individual races and was on two winning relays.
The 4A-5 meet, with girls powerhouse Windermere High, is Friday at Orlando’s Rosen Aquatic Center. Lake Brantley hosted 4A-3 on Wednesday.
