Warwick senior Ariana Logsdon won the Class 5 state cross country meet at the Oatlands Plantation course Saturday in Leesburg.
She covered the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 52.97 seconds to become the first girl from the Peninsula District to win a state cross country title and the second from the Peninsula since Tabb’s Kasandra Aulenbach won it in 2018.
Last season, Logsdon finished eighth at the state meet. She also was the Class 5 Region B champion this season.
Hampton Roads placed seven runners in the top 15.
Maury’s Sophia Sadr was seventh (19:09.71), Princess Anne’s Carolin Haen was ninth (19:37.06), Granby’s Ella Pringle was 10th (19:44.24), Cox’s Danielle Maynor was 11th (19:44.23), Hickory’s Alexis Rice was 12th (19:44.24) and Kellam’s Kate Spain was 15th (20:04.80).
Glen Allen won the girls title and Midlothian was second. Kellam finished one point behind in third. The Knights were led by Spain, Eva Jackson (19th), Brooke Arboneaux (26th), Aliya Acosta (28th) and Even Constantineau (33rd).
On the boys side, Maury’s Mateo Canga ran 16:18.48 to finish third. Warwick’s Nate Cochran was seventh (16:42.07), Kellam’s Finnegan Manny was 11th (16:48.73), Hickory’s Zach Schubert was 12th (16:50.96) and Ocean Lakes’ Fenton Million was 13th (16:56.50).
Hickory finished runner-up behind champion Albemarle. The Hawks were led by Schuber, Tristan Fancher (19th), Bryce Edmonson (27th), David Mudd (31st) and Jonathan Baum (49th).
Class 4
Jamestown sophomore Jonathan Grimm won the Class 4 state cross country title at the Oatlands Plantation course in Leesburg. He ran 15:40.38 to become the first boys Peninsula state champion since Grafton’s Kyle King won it in 2009 and 2010. He’s also the second Jamestown runner to win a state title since Andrew Colley did it in 2008.
Grafton’s Oran Barker was ninth (16:34.90) and Smithfield’s Caleb Greer was 15th (16:56.21).
Grafton’s girls finished third in Class 4. The Clippers placed three runners in the top 15, led by Amelia Valenti, who was 10th at 19:28.14. Macy Dodson was 11th (19:30.89) and Jillian Wallen was 13th (19:35.05). Sophia Byren and Sophia Fitzer were 39th and 41st, respectively.
Class 6
Western Branch junior Gabriel Everett ran 16:14 to finish 10th at the Class 6 state meet at Oatlands Plantation course in Leesburg.
Grassfield senior Benjamin Giffin was 19th to help the Grizzlies finish 10th overall.
On the girls side, Landstown senior Emily Yates was the highest local place finisher at 48th. Grassfield finished 10th.
VISAA state cross country meet
Cape Henry teammates Michael McKnew and Matthew McGuigan finished second and third, respectively, at the Division I cross country meet earlier this week at Panorama Farms in Earlysville.
McKnew ran 16:07.60 and McGuigan ran 16:13.30.
Hampton Roads Academy sophomore Lilyana Melnitchouk ran 18:50.20 to win the VISAA Division II state cross country meet. Cape Henry junior Brynn Barley was runner-up in 19:12.90. Peninsula Catholic junior Rachel Branan was 10th.
On the boys side, Norfolk Christian eighth-grader Sammy Reed ran 17:43.70 to finish 10th.
Walsingham Academy sophomore Remington Freeman ran 19:17.40 to win the Division III state cross country title. Greenbrier Christian senior Rachel Prince ran 20:00.30 to finish fourth.
