State officials: 200+ gallons of acid spill at CT business after forklift incident

Crews responded to a hazmat situation in Wallingford on Friday involving more than 200 gallons of acid.

The incident was reported in the late morning hours at Brand Nu Labs where a forklift reportedly punctured a 275-gallon tote containing phosphoric acid, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Just over 200 gallons of the acid was released onto the facility’s floor, some of which made it onto a worker’s shoes, DEEP officials said. The individual was able to quickly get the shoes off.

Another individual initially expressed mild respiratory concerns that were found to be unrelated, according to DEEP.

The building was evacuated as a precaution, and no injuries were reported, DEEP said.

DEEP’s Emergency Response Unit responded to the scene along with other crews. Brand Nu Labs contracted an environmental services firm which responded and neutralized the acid and cleaned the affected area, officials said. The state environmental agency was overseeing the operation.

According to DEEP, the incident did not lead to any off-site impacts or ongoing hazards.
