Virginia State Police have identified the man that an off-duty special agent shot and killed at the officer’s Virginia Beach home late Sunday morning.
The agent’s home is on Lee Road, a narrow, tree-lined street in Bay Colony, an affluent community near the Oceanfront. The house sits in the middle of the dead-end street, just a short walk from Linkhorn Bay.
Around 11:45 a.m., John Gregory Conner, 40, went to the agent’s front door and attempted to break in, according to a statement from State Police spokeswoman Michelle Anaya.
“A physical confrontation ensued between the agent and the subject, during which the agent discharged his service weapon,” striking Conner, the statement said.
Anaya said the agent attempted to provide first aid to Conner, but he died at the scene. He was pronounced dead by Virginia Beach Fire Department’s EMS.
Anaya said there is “no known prior relationship” between Conner and the special agent, and investigators have not released a motive for the break-in.
Police have not said what caused the special agent to use deadly force during the confrontation. Anaya has not immediately said whether Conner was armed.
Anaya said Conner was recently “experiencing homelessness,” and police could not immediately confirm a permanent address.
The special agent has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, she said. The case is being investigated by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Richmond Field Office.
This is a developing story. Please check back later for updates.
