Investigations are underway after police officers in Suffolk shot and killed a man suspected of car theft Wednesday night, according to police.
Just before 8:10 p.m., Suffolk police received a “be on the lookout,” or “BOLO,” for a stolen vehicle out of a neighboring jurisdiction, according to a release.
Police found the vehicle in the 900 block of Ashley Avenue, a residential area near Railroad Avenue, not far from N Main Street. As two officers approached the vehicle, the man inside fired a shot from the vehicle and officers returned fire, hitting the man, police said. The man was the only person in the vehicle.
The officers gave first aid until Suffolk Fire & Rescue arrived to provide emergency medical treatment. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
A gun was recovered from the scene. No officers were wounded in the shooting.
A criminal and internal investigation are underway and the officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, according to the release.
The identity of the man is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
