A nearly day-long standoff in Osceola County ended late Friday night when sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a suspect after he fired his weapon following negotiations, according to a report from WESH 2 News.
At approximately 10:40 a.m. on Friday, deputies responded Osceola County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to investigate a domestic battery incident that occurred overnight at the Jamison Apartments, the report said. The 30-year-old suspect locked himself inside of his apartment when deputies attempted to contact him.
The suspect subsequently began broadcasting live on Facebook, making suicidal remarks and displaying a handgun, the report said. Hostage negotiators and family members attempted to convince the man to surrender.
On Friday afternoon, deputies deployed a chemical agent into the apartment that resulted in the suspect coming out of the apartment, the report said. The suspected laid face down on the ground and was holding the handgun while pointing it at his own head.
Just before 9:00 p.m., the suspect fired his weapon, prompting deputies to return fire and strike him, the report said.
The suspect was transported to Osceola Regional Medical Center and was later pronounced dead, the report said.
According to the report, residents of the apartment complex witnessed the unfolding situation. Many expressed anger over the lack of information and the extended time they had to be out of their homes without a place to stay.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been called in to investigate the shooting.
