For 14 years, our group of guys — six to 10, depending on the season — have met for breakfast every Thursday in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Some of us have been going there since the ’60s.
The town has a great beach and great fishing, diving and eating. But because of the name change (Sea Grape Drive to President Donald J. Trump Drive), we will be eating breakfast from now on in Pompano Beach.
We will miss you.
William Farley, Pompano Beach
He doesn’t deserve it yet
Naming public places and spaces after anyone who has yet to be proven as a respectful and upstanding leader is premature and foolhardy.
When Trump’s term is complete, it would then be a proper response to name a street, school or building in his honor. He has not earned that honor yet.
Cynthia Floria, Fort Lauderdale
Let’s honor Epstein, too
I can’t understand why Mayor Edmund Malkoon and commissioners Theo Poulopoulos and Richard DeNapoli voted in the affirmative. Pandora’s Box is open!
Since the genie is out of the bottle, I think a new resolution is in order, co-designating El Mar Drive as the Jeffrey Edward Epstein Memorial Promenade.
Notwithstanding the controversial name, the sign’s length will be a real eye-catcher for our LBTS residents and wonderful tourists who stroll, exercise and drive on El Mar.
Jim Dadson, U.S. Navy captain (ret.), Lauderdale-by-the-Sea
Offensive to Canadians
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Mayor Edmund Malkoon and commissioners Richard DeNapoli and Theo Poulopoulos, three tone-deaf Trump puppets, voted to put the equivalent of an “I Love Trump” sign on Sea Grape Drive. Our non-political, non-divisive, sleepy little oasis will no longer be that way.
Their sycophantic behavior to Diabolical Donald is deplorable. But why stop there? I say let’s designate Jeffrey Epstein Boulevard, Harvey Weinstein Avenue and Bill Cosby Drive, too.
In an email exchange with the mayor, I was told that it’s “symbolic, not partisan, and it is not new in South Florida.” I am no presidential historian, but I’m pretty sure no other president has been approved for honorary roadway designations who had 34 felonies, a record of abusing women, who tried to overturn a fair election by starting a coup and then pardoned all involved.
Excuse me for not agreeing with your totally tone-deaf reasoning. This is a huge Canadian tourist town, and considering how they have been treated by this soulless administration, this decision will also have financial repercussions for local businesses.
Joe Hanson, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea
It’s reprehensible
I moved to Broward County 40 years ago from Long Island, N.Y. I found so many friends on and around Sea Grape Drive in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea that the name itself inspired me to find out what a seagrape is.
To co-designate Sea Grape Drive as President Donald J. Trump Drive is morally reprehensible.
Broward has been a liberal county since I’ve been around. To name a street after this man is contrary to your own citizens. I plead with you to leave Sea Grape alone.
W. Zane Morgan, Lake Worth Beach
A town’s many assets
Your editorial failed to recognize all the positive facts about Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
It’s a charming community and a very popular travel destination. We have very little crime and one of the lowest property tax rates in Broward. The town is very clean and well-managed by our town commission.
Would your editorial board have the same opinion if the town co-named Sea Grape Drive as Joe Biden Drive?
John Gabriel, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea
Staying away
Three MAGAs made the decision for their constituents, most of whom were against the renaming. It’s typical of the cult not to listen to those they represent, but to seek the favor of the narcissist, who couldn’t care less about any of them. You won’t see me in LBTS!
Wanda Francis, Fort Lauderdale
A special case
Most people have no problem honoring presidents but this is a special case. He’s a twice-impeached felon and known con man. He was under indictment for another 60 felony counts, and the only reason they weren’t executed was because he won the election. Poor choice, LBTS.
Jim Bass, Deerfield Beach
Undeserving
President Trump does not deserve this honor.
Anne-Marie Bursevich, Highland Beach
Unnecessary
Whether you love him or hate him, adding DJT’s name on a street sign is so unnecessary.
This is how division starts. We don’t need it or want it.
David W. Miller, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea
A dump for Trump
How about renaming the local sewage treatment facilities for President No. 47? Or perhaps renaming the nearby local landfill? Dump Trump — how appropriate.
John Pfau, Plantation
