Texas mom accused of moving out of apartment, abandoning son

A Texas mother is accused of abandoning her 12-year-old son after moving out of their apartment while he was at school.

The boy returned to the Copperas Cove home in central Texas on Oct. 17 and found the apartment was packed up and his mom and her boyfriend had moved out.

He told police his family “moved and left him there.” The home was “completely barren,” according to an arrest affidavit reviewed by KWTX in Waco. The boy confirmed to officers that “the apartment was not like that when he left” for school in the morning.

A neighbor told police the couple had kicked the boy out in the past and told the neighbor “they were moving at some point.”

Keven Dwyane Adams, the boyfriend, told police that Erica Renee Sanders, the mother, had moved in with him but the boy “was not welcome in his home.”

He denied the boy had been abandoned and Sanders told police her brother was supposed to pick him up from school.

The boy’s uncle told them he was unaware of that arrangement.

The couple also refused to give child protective services their new address. Investigators found the new residence through a water bill. It’s unclear how long it took investigators to find the two.

Sanders and Adams were both arrested last week and charged with felony abandoning or endangering a child without intent to return.

The child and his five siblings have since been “removed from their parents’ custody and are currently in foster care,” the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services told “People” magazine.
