The Texas State women erased a 10-point deficit Saturday and got critical stops down the stretch to defeat Old Dominion 65-61 Saturday in San Marcos.
ODU (12-9, 4-5 Sun Belt) led 27-19 at halftime and increased the lead to 10, the last time at 44-34 late in the third quarter. It was 57-52 before a 7-0 run gave Texas State (9-10, 5-4) a 59-57 edge.
Riley Stack’s layup tied the score at 59, but after the Bobcats nearly turned the ball over at the midcourt line, Mia Galbraith drove for a layup and a 61-59 lead with 1:36 on the clock.
Three ODU field-goal misses later, Texas State hit enough free throws to go ahead 65-59. ODU’s En’Dya Buford sank a long shot at the 13-second mark. It was originally ruled a 3-pointer, but after replay, it was ruled a 2. The Monarchs never had a chance to pull even.
“The road has been unkind to us, and we failed to grasp a much-needed win tonight,” ODU coach DeLisha Milton-Jones said on odusports.com. “Too many missed box-outs and lost opportunities on 50/50 balls cost us greatly. Road wins start and end with your ability to rebound the ball, and we failed miserably in that regard. Home is always good for us to regroup, and what better moment than now for us to do so.”
ODU will play Wednesday at Chartway Arena against Louisiana Monroe.
A free throw that increased Texas State’s lead to 62-59 came after SImaru Fields committed a foul. Fields was judged by the home team’s scorer to have accumulated five fouls, but it was Simone Cunningham who had four fouls before that, while Fields had three. Fields was sent to the bench, and the situation wasn’t resolved until there was 12 seconds remaining.
Stack led the Monarchs with 16 points, followed by Fields’ 14 and Buford’s 11.
