PORTSMOUTH — Logan Wynne threw four touchdown passes and guided an offense that amassed 526 yards Thursday night as Churchland pulled away for a 50-21 nondistrict victory over Grassfield at Norcom’s stadium.
Wynne was 17 of 23 for 297 yards with an interception, and Churchland ran for 229 yards on 25 carries. Keith Williams rushed for two TDs and 146 yards on 14 attempts.
Grassfield’s Colin Sparrow threw for three touchdowns and 184 yards on 18-of-37 passing, and he accounted for most of the Grizzlies’ 220 offensive yards.
For a quarter, it was quite a debut for the Grizzlies in their first game under coach Mike Biehl. Wynne’s 41-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Person capped a four-play, 80-yard drive to put the Truckers ahead, but 9- and 16-yard TD throws by Sparrow, the latter to Trevor Whitted, gave Grassfield a 13-6 edge.
The Truckers dominated the second quarter with power running and efficient passing, scoring on three of their four possessions to move ahead 29-13 at the half. Aqui Hayes’ 41-yard touchdown run and Dereon Ripley’s two-point conversion run put Churchland ahead to stay. Ripley, Floyd Logan and Cameron Gunter joined Person in catching touchdown passes from Wynne.
Sparrow’s third scoring pass brought Grassfield to 29-21, but Logan’s 22-yard TD reception in the third quarter swung the momentum back to the Truckers.
The teams combined for 274 yards in penalties.
