The Norfolk Tides incurred their third loss at Gwinnett in as many nights, falling 4-2 Thursday before 2,262 at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Sandy León broke a tie with a two-run homer off reliever Anthony Nunez in the eighth.
What’s more, Norfolk only managed two hits for the second consecutive night — seemingly feeling the effects of Baltimore’s recent promotion of standout hitters Samuel Basallo and Dylan Beavers to the majors.
The Tides (25-27 in the International League’s first half, 55-70 overall) had won three consecutive series until this one, when they’ll have to win the final trio of games against the Atlanta Braves’ top farm club to gain a split. The series continues at 7:05 Friday night with Tides right-hander Carson Ragsdale (1-0, 1.80 ERA) scheduled to oppose lefty José Suarez (1-1, 4.10).
Gwinnett (27-26, 56-72) went ahead in the second inning after three walks by Tides starter Levi Wells, who was making his Triple-A debut after being called up from Double-A Chesapeake, loaded the bases. With two out, Jesús Bastidas singled home Conner Capel and Matthew Batten, prompting Tides manager Tim Fedorowicz to relieve Wells with Thaddeus Ward after 61 pitches. Wells walked five and struck out none.
Norfolk pulled even in the third in unusual fashion. Two walks sandwiched Hudson Haskin’s single, loading the bases with one out.
Jud Fabian walked to force home the tying run, and Haskin scored the tying run when TT Bowens was hit by a pitch. Starter Jhancarlos Lara struck out José Barrero before reliever Connor Seabold forced Silas Ardoin to pop out.
After shutout Norfolk relief by Ward, Elvin Rodríguez and Chayce McDermott, Capel opened the eighth by reaching on Bowens’ fielding error at first base. One out later, León clubbed a 369-foot home run.
Hayden Harris retired the Tides 1-2-3 in the ninth to save the triumph for Rolddy Muñoz.
