José Barrero was 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs as the Norfolk Tides ended a four-game losing streak Thursday night with a 7-4 victory over the Durham Bulls before 6,686.
The final road series of the year for the Tides, scheduled for seven games, continues with its fourth contest at 6:35 p.m. Friday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
In the second inning, Norfolk (29-35 in the International League’s second half, 59-78 overall) took control with four runs. Barrero singled home Jud Fabian and scored on Reed Trimble’s double before Gary Sánchez, in the second game of a rehabilitation assignment from the Baltimore Orioles, singled home Terrin Vavra and Trimble.
With the bases loaded and none out in the third, the Bulls (34-30, 79-60) made it 4-1 as Tres Barrera scored on Tre’ Morgan’s sacrifice fly, but right fielder Trimble threw out Kameron Misner at second base for a double play.
RBI doubles by Barrero and Vavra in the fifth put Norfolk ahead 6-1. Winner Cameron Weston (5-8) held Durham to a run and five hits in five innings, striking out three and surviving five walks.
The Bulls scored three times off reliever Scott Blewett in the sixth, getting a sacrifice fly from Hunter Stovall and a two-run homer from Barrera to pull within 6-4.
But Chayce McDermott pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth, striking out four, and Anthony Nunez gained his third Norfolk save by striking out two in a hitless ninth.
The Tides had 11 hits, including two each by Vavra and Trimble at the bottom two spots in the lineup, despite striking out 14 times.
