Tides fall at Gwinnett despite Tyler Wells’ solid rehab start

Though Tyler Wells excelled in his fifth rehabilitation start with Norfolk, the Tides managed just two hits and lost 2-1 to Gwinnett on Wednesday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

The Atlanta Braves’ No. 2 prospect, JR Ritchie (3-1), struck out a career-high 11, plunked a batter and walked two in six innings. The only hit the Gwinnett starter allowed was a ground-rule double by Jorge Mateo leading off the game, but Ritchie struck out the next three batters. In the sixth, he struck out TT Bowens on a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded.

The Stripers (26-26 in the International League’s second half, 55-72 overall) took a 2-0 lead over the Tides (25-26, 55-69) in a series that will continue at 7:05 p.m. Thursday.

Wells threw 90 pitches in 6 1/3 innings, yielding six hits and a walk but striking out five. He has a 1-2 record and a 2.70 earned-run average in 23 1/3 innings with the Tides.

In the Gwinnett fifth, Luke Waddell singled with one out and Jonathan Ornelas belted a two-run homer to left-center with two out.
In the ninth, Bowens slugged a home run to left with one out off reliever Daysbel Hernández, who has spent most of the year with Atlanta. José Barrero drew a two-out walk before Livan Soto flied out to left to end the game.

Levi Wells (no relation to Tyler), 23, just called up from the Double-A Chesapeake Baysox of Bowie, Maryland, will make his Triple-A debut as Wednesday night’s starter for the Tides. The Orioles chose him from Texas State in the 2023 draft’s fourth round.

Jhancarlos Lara (0-2, 4.70) is scheduled to pitch for the Stripers.

Also Wednesday, the Orioles promoted infielder Emmanuel Rivera and pitcher Roansy Contreras from the Tides and optioned pitcher Yaramil Hiraldo to Norfolk. The Tides already have set a team record for the most transactions in a season.
