Mike Vecchione knew coffee would be his career one day when he learned about farming and roasting in Guatemala while traveling with the Coast Guard.
But the 20-year Coast Guard veteran never imagined he would be selling coffee back to his former employer. Then Town Center Cold Pressed, where he is head roaster, was approached by that branch of the armed forces to bid on supplying Coast Guard Exchange stores.
So the Virginia Beach coffee company, which promotes ethically sourced coffee and premium cold brew, developed a high quality coffee that pays tribute to those who safeguard our shores. And Rescue Roast Coffee became available at Coast Guard Exchanges nationwide.
The single-origin Brazilian coffee has flavor notes of dark chocolate, sea salt and toasted hazelnut that maintains its sweetness.
“I roasted it to an ideal medium roast so light roast coffee drinkers will still find it good, but dark roast coffee drinkers will find it enough,” Vecchione said.

He recently fulfilled an order of 1,000 bags for 18 stores in 13 states. They include the Coast Guard base in Portsmouth, the training center in Yorktown and the exchange in Chesapeake — one of the largest in the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard-branded bags include the service’s iconic racing stripe, a helicopter and a boat on the cover. A picture of Vecchione on active duty in Iraq also appears on the side of the bag to show he roasts with a purpose.
“It’s a neat feeling having my product in Coast Guard stores that I used to shop at when I was on active duty,” he said.
Active-duty members, veterans and Coast Guard families can get a 12-ounce bag for $14.99, and a portion of the sales will go to the Coast Guard’s Morale, Well-Being, and Recreation Program.
