MIAMI GARDENS — It’s Year 2 for Sun Sentinel Dolphins columnist Chris Perkins and Dolphins writer David Furones picking prop bets, which they’ll do for all 17 regular-season games.
Prior to each game, Furones and Perkins will select a “Best Bet” and a “Longshot.” The “Best Bet” selection is a near 50-50 proposition while the “Longshot” is at least +300 or a 3-to-1 probability.
They don’t place dollar amounts on their bets (neither wants to go broke), but you’re welcome to wager as much as you can afford.
Furones is 3-1 on his “Best Bets” while Perk is 0-4. On the “Longshot,” Furones is 2-2 while Perk is 0-4.
Perkins and Furones use the Hard Rock Bet app for odds. Be sure to check the South Florida Sun Sentinel game predictions for Thursday’s outlook.
Perk’s Best Bet: Tua Tagovailoa over 1.5 rushing yards (-100)
I might be pushing my luck here considering quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, not known for his running ability, has rushed for 2 yards and 3 yards in each of his last two games, respectively. On the other hand, I’ll choose to believe he’s on a roll, I’m looking for Tagovailoa to cross the line of scrimmage a couple of times. The Dolphins used him on rollouts to a relatively large degree last week.
Furones’ Best Bet: Malik Washington over 3.5 receptions (-110)
Jaylen Waddle must rise to being a true No. 1 with Tyreek Hill out, but with that also comes No. 1 receiver attention from the opposing defense. Malik Washington may have the most to gain relative to expectations. He developed a strong chemistry with Tua in the preseason, and that should flourish, even if it’s mostly on underneath routes. That’s why I’m going with the receptions number and not his receiving yards.
Furones won last week as New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson had more than 60.5 yards receving. Perk lost (again) as De’Von Achane didn’t have more than 5.5 receptions.
Perk’s Longshot: Jaylen Waddle first quarter TD (+800)
The Panthers will slip-up on their coverage early and tighten up late. But I’m counting on Waddle to take advantage of their early lapse. The Dolphins will likely spread the receptions around among tight end Darren Waller, running back De’Von Achane and slot receiver Malik Washington, but Waddle will eat.
Furones’ Longshot: Nick Westbrook-Ikhine anytime TD (+425)
He has barely been part of the offense with six targets and four catches in four games, but let’s not forget this is a player who caught nine touchdowns in Tennessee last year. Now would be the time for McDaniel to use him in the red zone with Hill out and with Waller surely drawing the focus of the Panthers defense in the red area. I also recall Week 5 was when Jonnu Smith got going in Miami’s offense last year, so this could be the moment it flips for him.
Furones won last week when Dolphins tight end Darren Waller had a touchdown. Perk lost (again) as Jets running back Breece Hall failed to rush for more than 100 yards.
