Top-ranked Maury escapes with win over Bishop McNamara in 3 overtimes

NORFOLK — For the third consecutive week, top-ranked Maury faced a tough opponent from out of the area.

And for the third time, it went down to the end.

On Friday, the Commodores needed three overtimes to beat Bishop McNamara of Prince George’s County in Maryland 38-35 on kicker Charles McCoy’s 23-yard field goal to win their home opener at Powhatan Field.

“We’ve already been battle-tested two games in a row,” Maury coach Dyrri McCain explained. “We had one go down to the last play that went our way (against Varina last week in Richmond). We had another that went down to the last play that didn’t go our way (against Cardinal Gibbons in Raleigh, North Carolina). And then we get into this game that goes not one, not two, but three overtimes. This is going to prepare for us that long run. And I feel good about how our guys performed at the last moment. And in all three games, we didn’t stop fighting.”

The Commodores (2-1) took an early lead on sophomore quarterback Domo Everette’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Moss-Williams. The extra-point try was blocked.

They added to their lead in the second quarter on running back Tayshawn Branche’s 13-yard touchdown run. Matt Williams scored the two-point conversion and the Commodores led 14-0.

Bishop McNamara, ranked No. 13 in Maryland by MaxPreps and located in Forestville, scored 21 unanswered points over the next three quarters to take a 21-14 lead in the fourth quarter.

But with 1:38 left in regulation, Everette scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to help send the game into overtime.

Both teams scored in the first and second overtimes, including Everette scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run in the first overtime  and a 3-yard run in the second.

In the third overtime, the Commodores got a huge stop from Isaiah Simmons, who tackled running back Donovan Barnes for a 7-yard loss. The Mustangs (1-1) then tried to a 23-yard field-goal attempt, but it was blocked by Kamari Watson.

All Maury had to do was score.

And the Commodores did a short time later when McCoy kicked the game-winner.

“I thought we were going to score at the end, so I didn’t think I was going to have to take that last field goal,” McCoy said. “But I drilled it. As soon as I kicked it, I knew it was going to go in.”
