Tribe’s Sallman shares CAA weekly award

William & Mary junior center Tika Sallman was named a Coastal Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week. She scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Sunday as the Tribe beat Towson 75-70 at Kaplan Arena.

Sallman shared the honor with UNC Wilmington guard Rori Cox, a Virginia Union transfer who scored 33 points in a 69-64 victory over North Carolina A&T.

CNU’s Snively takes conference award

Christopher Newport senior McKenna Snively was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the first time. She hit 8 of 9 3-point tries while scoring 30 points in Saturday’s victory at Salisbury, finishing 10 of 13 from the field.

In nine minutes in a lopsided victory against Regent, she had six points.

Big South honors Longwood’s Billups

Longwood guard/forward Alphonzo “Fats” Billups III and Winthrop guard Kareem Rozier were named the Big South Co-Players of the Week.

Billups, a former VHSL Class 4 Player of the Year for Varina who transferred from VCU, who entered the week averaging 7.1 points, tripled his season scoring average with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting against UNC Asheville and a career-high 25 in an overtime win over USC Upstate. Against Upstate, he had a career-high eight rebounds. For the week, he was 17 of 24 from the field (including 10 of 16 from 3-point range) with 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals.

VCU freshman Nyk Lewis was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. He totaled 21 points, 15 rebounds and five assists while making 7 of 12 field-goal attempts in a pair of road victories.

NSU’s Bryant gains pitching award

Norfolk State junior Kailey Bryant was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Bryant helped the Spartans to a 3-1 opening-weekend record by going 2-0. She pitched 13 1/3 innings, striking out seven while posting a 2.10 earned-run average and holding opponents to a .286 batting average.

In the season opener against Rider, Bryant threw a complete game with four strikeouts to secure a 5-4 victory.

COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD

HU athletes win Pre-Nationals events

At the weekend Pre-Nationals at Virginia Beach Sports Center, Hampton’s Michael Rodriguez-King set a meet record in winning the men’s 800 meters in 1:51.62, edging teammate Mohammed Al-YaFee, who also broke the previous meet record in 1:51.82.

HU’s Yashahya Brown won the men’s 60-meter hurdles in 7.96.

On the women’s side, Kylee King (1:33.07) and Avah Savage (1:33.84) led a Hampton sweep of the top five in the 600 meters. The Pirates’ Danielle James won the long jump in a personal best of 6.05 meters (19 feet, 10.25 inches), and teammate Damali Wiliams won the weight throw at 17.50 meters (57-5).

At Liberty’s Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational iin Lynchburg, Maury High graduate Bria Byrd of James Madison long-jumped a personal-best 6.09 meters (19-11.75) for second place in the meet and second in JMU history.

CNU’s Morrison gets conference award

CNU senior Brookelyn Morrison was named the C2C Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in her career.During a 23-2 season-opening home victory Friday against Berry, she caused eight turnovers and had six draw controls and six ground balls, as well as three goals and two assists.

JMU 22nd, UVA 24th in coaches’ poll

James Madison was ranked 22nd in the new coaches’ poll, dropping one spot despite a 13-7 victory over Virginia Tech and a 13-11 triumph against Connecticut.

Virginia fell 12 spots to 24th after an 0-3 start, with losses of 12-10 to No. 16 Navy, 12-11 to Richmond and 17-9 at No. 6 Maryland. Reigning NCAA champion North Carolina remained at the top, and its ACC rival Stanford climbed two spots to No. 2.
