A woman is dead and three others are injured after a box truck fleeing a hit-and-run crash causes a six vehicle crash in Brevard County on Friday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
At approximately 6:42 p.m., a 2017 box truck was traveling southbound on Hollywood Boulevard approaching the intersection of Eber Boulevard, FHP said. A 2021 Porsche Taycan was traveling eastbound on Eber Boulevard approaching the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard.
FHP said at the same time a 2022 Mazda 3, a 2016 Honda Odyssey, a 2019 Ford Escape and a 2011 Toyota Camry were stopped in the northbound lane on Hollywood Boulevard at the intersection of Eber Boulevard. The Mazda 3 and Ford Escape were in the left turn lane while the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Camry were in the northbound straight through lane.
The 26-year-old box truck driver ran the red light and entered the direct path of the Porsche, FHP said. As a result, the truck collided with the left side of the vehicle. This impact caused the truck to overturn tonto its left side while continuing in southeasterly direction. The truck struck the raised concrete curb on the southeastern corner of the intersection, causing the truck to overturn into the grassy ditch.
As the truck overturned, it set into motion debris that struck the Toyota Camry’s windshield, FHP said, The initial impact with the truck pushed the Porsche into the Mazda and Honda Odyssey while rotating clockwise. At this time, the front of the Porsche struck the front of the Mazda followed by the front left of the Porsche striking the front left of the Honda Odyssey.
FHP said the front of the Porsche then struck the front of Ford Escape as it rotated. The impact with the Porsche pushed the Mazda in a southwesterly direction, resulting the right side of the Mazda striking the front left of the Ford Escape.
The 67-year-old Porsche driver was transported to Holmes Regional Hospital and was later pronounced dead, FHP said. The drivers of the Mazda, Honda Odyssey, Ford Escape and Toyota Camry were not transported and all have minor to no injuries.
Investigators advised that prior to this collision, the 26-year-old man from Melbourne was fleeing from a previous hit-and run that the West Melbourne Police Department is investigating, FHP said. The man was admitted into the hospital with serious injuries and charges are pending.
This case remains an active criminal investigation.
