Tyler Hughes enjoyed perhaps his finest day as a William & Mary quarterback, throwing for four touchdowns Saturday as the Tribe downed Charleston Southern 34-7 in a weather-delayed game at Zable Stadium.
It was the 100th victory for Mike London as a head coach, and he has gained a plurality of those victories with the Tribe. The Tabb High graduate is 100-88 (24-5 with Richmond, 27-46 with Virginia, 11-10 with Howard and 38-27 with W&M).
After kickoff was delayed by about an hour, Hughes completed 22 of 34 passes for 296 yards, and 10 W&M players made at least one catch as the Tribe improved to 2-2.
Tight end Jackson Blee caught three of those throws for 77 yards and two touchdowns, Joseph Johnson made four receptions for 45 yards and a score, and Alfred Honesty had two grabs for 17 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown to start the scoring. The touchdowns were the first in college for all three of them.
Hughes orchestrated a go-ahead, 14-play, 90-yard drive that took 2:05 and closed the first half. It was part of a day on which the Tribe converted 14 of 21 third downs and, for the third game in a row, didn’t commit a turnover.
Rashad Raymond, who had two catches for 29 yards, led the Tribe’s rushing game with 21 carries for 75 yards. His 1-yard touchdown run on the first half’s final play gave W&M a 14-7 edge. Hughes had 51 yards on 16 carries.
Many of the Buccaneers’ 249 offensive yards came from Hakeem Watters, who ran for 119 on 13 carries, including a tying touchdown with 11:23 left in the second quarter.
But W&M’s Nathaniel McDonald and Trevon Cannon recovered fumbles by CSU (0-4). Luke Banbury totaled a team-high 12 tackles, and fellow linebacker Jaden Boring posted seven stops. Both of them forced fumbles.
The Tribe will try to improve its 1-0 Coastal Athletic Association mark at 3:30 p.m. next Saturday at Villanova.
