Female Uber drivers and riders in Hampton Roads now have the option to match with women on trips.
The company over the years had received feedback from women around the world who requested the ability to make the choice through the rideshare app.
Uber responded with the development of a program, Women Preferences, that launched in Saudi Arabia in 2019 — the year after women were finally given the right to drive in that country.
After successful pilots in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Phoenix, and Denver, the program went live in Hampton Roads on Nov. 12.
Austen Radcliff, an Uber spokesperson, said the feature aims to enhance confidence and safety for women users.
Women riders just toggle a preference by selecting “Women Drivers” for on-demand rides, advance reservations or as a general app setting preference. Women drivers can select the “Women Rider Preference” setting if they prefer to drive only other women.
The option to request a woman driver is also available on teen accounts.

While the number of drivers varies from city to city, women make up, on average, about 1 in 5 drivers on the platform, Radcliff said.
“The whole purpose of building Women Preferences is to give women riders and drivers more choice and control over how they ride and drive with Uber,” Radcliff said.
