The UConn women’s basketball team added a fifth ranked victory to its resume on Saturday to maintain its No. 1 position in the AP Top 25 poll for an eighth consecutive poll.
The Huskies routed Iowa 90-64 in the Women’s Champions Classic at Barclays Center, knocking the Hawkeyes down three places in the poll to No. 14. UConn also holds wins over No. 6 Michigan, No. 13 Louisville, No. 17 USC and No. 19 Ohio State. Louisville has been one of the biggest recent risers, moving up three spots this week after dominating Tennessee 89-65 in the first matchup of the Women’s Champions Classic on Saturday. The Cardinals also beat No. 16 North Carolina last week to open ACC play.
The top 10 teams have remained the same since Week 3, but there was significant movement in the lower half of the poll this week. Texas Tech made its first appearance in the top 25 at No. 21 after a one-point road win over Baylor on Sunday. The Bears, who have been a top-15 team since Week 1, fell to No. 22 with the loss. Washington dropped out of the rankings for the first time since the preseason after getting upset by California on Sunday.
UConn returns to play after the holiday break for a Big East game at Butler on Dec. 28, but the team won’t see another ranked opponent again until it faces No. 18 Notre Dame at Gampel Pavilion on Jan. 19. Their last top-25 matchup of the regular season will likely be against No. 23 Tennessee in Hartford on Feb. 1.
