The UConn women’s basketball team is out to its first 9-0 start since 2020-21, keeping the Huskies at No. 1 the AP Top 25 poll for a sixth consecutive week including the preseason.
No. 2 Texas is on UConn’s heels receiving nine of a possible 32 first place votes after a win over No. 12 North Carolina on Thursday, but the Huskies held onto their top spot with 23 first-place votes thanks to a pair of dominant wins last week. UConn routed South Florida 85-51 on the road Tuesday, then beat DePaul by a season-high 67 points at Gampel Pavilion on Sunday.
The rest of the top 10 held steady as it has for most of the season, but there were major shifts further down the pole. Despite beating Notre Dame on Thursday, Ole Miss fell four places to No. 17 after getting upset by Kansas State on Sunday, and the Fighting Irish also moved down a spot as a result to No. 19.
Michigan State dropped five places to No. 25 after a double-digit loss to Wisconsin in its Big Ten opener, and West Virginia was knocked out of the poll thanks to an upset by Villanova. Nebraska made its season debut in the Top 25 at No. 24.
UConn will play its first ranked matchup since Nov. 21 against No. 6 Michigan this week when it faces No. 16 USC in Los Angeles on Saturday. The Trojans earned their first top 25 win of the season over No. 20 Washington in their Big Ten opener Sunday. The Huskies will also face No. 11 Iowa on Dec. 20 in the Women’s Champions Classic at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
