UM at FSU predictions: Will No. 18 Seminoles pull off big upset vs. No. 3 Miami? (1 writer thinks so)

No. 3 Miami (4-0) at No. 18 FSU (3-1), Saturday, 7:30, ABC

Latest line: Miami is favored by 4 1/2 points

Adam Lichtenstein, Miami Hurricanes Writer: Miami 35, FSU 27

This game was poised to be the biggest matchup of the week. Miami is a top-three team. Florida State was a top-10 team. All the Seminoles needed to do was hold up their end of the bargain and beat Virginia on the road, and Tallahassee would be the heart of the college football world on Saturday. Oops. FSU lost to Virginia for its first defeat of the year. But this should still be a good game, as the Seminoles offer the tough Hurricanes defense its biggest test of the year. Gus Malzahn and the reworked FSU offense will probably put up points, but Miami will ultimately prove too much for Florida State.

The national lure of this game went away with Florida State’s double-overtime loss at Virginia last Friday. The local lure remains. After beating Florida, No. 3 Miami is just too strong along the offensive and defensive lines to be taken down by No. 18 Florida State. Throw in an early-season win over South Florida, and Miami wins the state title. Its season wants more. Much more.

The Seminoles need to bounce back after losing to Virginia on the road last week. FSU quarterback Tommy Castellanos has shown he has the confidence to lead this team, and he has been a dynamic dual-threat quarterback. Miami’s pass rush has been excellent, but Castellanos is athletic enough to make things happen when stars like Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor get into the backfield. This is UM’s first road game of the year, and Doak Campbell Stadium will be the most challenging road environment Miami will travel to this season. FSU, which stunned Alabama 31-17 in Week 1, could give its fans another reason to storm the field once again.
