The undefeated Oregon women zoomed past Old Dominion 84-46 at the Women’s Hoopfest Challenge, leaving the Monarchs (5-3) exiting the event in Frisco, Texas, with an 0-2 mark.
“All losses are tough to experience, but the growth that is coming from this will build championship character that will serve us in a major way within conference play,” ODU coach DeLisha Milton-Jones said on odusports.com.
ODU went ahead 4-0, but the Ducks (8-0) moved ahead 6-5 and remained in front, 20-11, 41-25 and 59-35 at each quarter’s end.
Kelsey Thompson led the Monarchs with 10 points, followed by Simone Cunningham’s eight and Simaru Fields’ seven. Cunningham brought down nine rebounds, and Riley Stack blocked four shots.
Astera Tuhina scored 18 and Ehis Etute 15 for Oregon, which shot 49.2% (31 of 63) to ODU’s 27.4% (17 of 62).
Stephen F. Austin 67, Hampton 61: Hampton (3-3) rallied from an 18-point third-quarter deficit to cut the margin to two, but the Lumberjacks converted 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to win in the first round of the Puerto Rico Clasico in Bayamon.
Cha Gardner had 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 16 rebounds for SFA. Key Roseby led the Lumberjacks with 16 points.Kayla Lezama had 18 points to lead Hampton, while Kiki McElrath and Aisha Dabo added seven apiece. Le’Asia Foreman had six points and nine rebounds, including six offensive.
Hampton next will face Buffalo at 9 a.m. Eastern Saturday.
Longwood 68, Buffalo 64: Also at the Puerto Rico Clasico, Amor Harris scored 15 points and Jaci Bolden 13 to help the Lancers (5-3) edge the Bulls (1-5).
Brigham Young 64, Virginia Tech 60: Despite Carleigh Wenzel’s 18 points and Kilah Freelon’s 14 rebounds and five blocks, the Hokies (5-2) lost to the Cougars (7-0) in the Paradise Jam’s Island Division at Charlotte Amalie in the Virgin Islands.
Sydney Benally had 18 points and seven assists for BYU, which outscored Tech 20-11 in the third quarter to go ahead 43-38. Kayl Petersen came off the bench to score 17.
No. 7 Maryland 95, Hofstra 38: Kaylene Smikle scored 13 points to help The Terrapins (9-0) rout the Pride (1-4) at the Puerto Rico Shootout in Carolina. Twelve Maryland players scored.
Hofstra was outrebounded 40-17 and committed 24 turnovers.
