UVA continues basketball offensive surge, goes to 4-0 by beating Marshall

Thijs De Ridder scored 23 points, Dallin Hall and Malik Thomas each added 18, and Virginia used 61 first-half points to cruise past Marshall 104-78 Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena.

UVA (4-0), which entered having scored 80-plus points in its first three games for the first time since 2006, scored 100 for the first time since the 2018-19 season — also against Marshall. Ryan Odom joined Henry Lannigan as the only coaches in program history to start a tenure 4-0.

Thomas, a San Francisco transfer, scored 16 points in the first half on 6-of-7 shooting to help Virginia build a 61-33 lead. The Cavaliers had an early 11-0 run and a late 16-0 spurt to go ahead 53-21 — their largest lead of the game. Virginia’s second-half lead never dropped below 18.

George Washington 96, Old Dominion 73: GW is expected to have one of its best teams in recent memory this season, and ODU found out the hard way in D.C.’s Foggy Bottom area.

The Revolutionaries (4-0), predicted fourth in the 14-team Atlantic 10, scored 26 points in the first eight minutes of the second half to pull away for a 96-73 triumph over the Monarchs (2-2).

“We didn’t come out in the second half with the energy that we needed,” Monarchs coach Mike Jones said on odusports.com. “… This is on me, but we needed to be a tougher team, and I did not prepare us to do that.”

ODU went on an 18-2 run to go ahead 36-30, but GW ended the half ahead 44-41. With the clock under four minutes, it was 89-58.KC Shaw and Robert Davis Jr. paced ODU with 14 points apiece. Rafael Castro led GW with 20, and reserves Garrett Johnson and Jean Aranguren had 17 each.

No. 3 Connecticut 86, No. 7 Brigham Young 84: Silas Demary Jr. scored 21 points and made a crucial steal for UConn in a game at TD Garden, home of the Boston Celtics, as part of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Series.

Tarris Reed Jr. added 21 points and eight rebounds. Alex Karaban also had 21 points for the Huskies (4-0), who began a five-game stretch that features four Top 25 opponents.

Touted BYU freshman forward AJ Dybantsa, who grew up just outside Boston and is considered a potential No. 1 pick in the NBA draft next summer, led the Cougars (3-1) with 25 points.

No. 13 St. John’s 93, William & Mary 60: Bryce Hopkins and Joson Sanon scored 15 points apiece for St. John’s at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, New York. W&M trailed only 39-34 at halftime but couldn’t keep pace after that.

Hopkins and Sanon combined to make 11 of 23 shots for the Red Storm (2-1), who dropped eight spots in this week’s AP Top 25 poll after last weekend’s loss to Alabama at Madison Square Garden.

Reese Miller scored 11 points for the Tribe (2-2), whose last win over a Top 25 team was against North Carolina in 1977. W&M shot 38% from the floor and committed 24 turnovers.

Longwood 90, Binghamton 82: Emanuel Richards’ 22 points helped the Lancers (3-1) beat the Bearcats (1-4) in Farmville. Longwood had five double-digit scorers.

Apprentice 88, Methodist 77: The Builders (2-2) won in Fayetteville, North Carolina, behind Shamon Rosser’s 21 points, Devon Brown’s 15 points and eight rebounds and Wayne Hedgepath’s 14 points and nine rebounds.

Catholic 84, Christopher Newport 74: The Cardinals, ranked 22nd in the d3hoops.com preseason poll, beat the No. 9 Captains in Washington despite Tyson Henderson’s 16 points, five rebounds and four assists and Collin Hines’ 18 points for CNU (1-2).

CJ Ruoff had 20 points and six assists for Catholic, and Charley Hepting had 16 points.

Lynchburg 82, Regent 66: Jamarcus Brown had 25 points and 12 rebounds as the host Hornets (2-2) overcame the Royals (0-2) despite Antoine Brown’s 15 points and Brendan Goods’ 11 for Regent.

Wright State 92, Radford 59: Solomon Callaghan’s 20 points paced the Raiders in a dominant performance at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. NC State transfer Dennis Parker Jr. scored 15 for the Highlanders.

Long Island 88, James Madison 79: Jamal Fuller scored 21 points as the Sharks (3-1) shot 59% and beat the Dukes (2-3) in Brooklyn, New York. Bradley Douglas had 16 points for JMU, which went ahead 5-0 but almost exclusively trailed after that.

Syracuse 80, Drexel 50: Kiyan Anthony, the freshman son of Syracuse and NBA legend Carmelo Anthony, scored 18 points for the Orange in Philadelphia. Eli Beard had 13 for the Dragons.

SMU 89, Butler 87: Boopie Miller scored 23 points, and Jaron Pierre Jr.’s reverse layup with four seconds left carried SMU (4-0) to a victory in Dallas. The Mustangs shot 56%.

Finley Bizjack missed a deep 3-point attempt that bounced hard off the back of the rim as time expired. He scored 18 points for Butler (3-1).

Miami of Ohio 76, Air Force 61: Brant Byers’ 18 points propelled the Redhawks (3-0) in Colorado. Caleb Walker led the Falcons (0-4) with 17.

Harvard 75, Army 52: Thomas Batties III netted 17 points for the Crimson (3-1) in a road victory. Ryan Curry scored 11 for the Black Knights (1-3).

Jacksonville 69, VMI 67: Chris Arias scored 24 points off the bench and hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining for the Dolphins (2-2) against the Keydets (3-2) in Florida.

Jacksonville led 66-57 with 4:07 remaining, then went coreless until Arias rose up over two defenders. Arias added six rebounds and a pair of steals.

VMI’s TJ Johnson finished with 18 points and six rebounds. Menchville High graduate AJ Clark added 15 points and two steals.

No. 12 Louisville 106, Ohio 81: Ryan Conwell scored 22 points and Louisville had its best 3-point shooting game of the season to cruise to a victory against Ohio.

The host Cardinals (4-0) went 16 of 35 from beyond the arc in matching their best start to a season in five years.

Boston College 76, Temple 71: Former Landstown High star Donald Hand Jr. had 18 points and 11 rebounds, Boden Kapke and Fred Payne each scored 17 points and Boston College (2-2) beat Temple (2-1) in Philadelphia.

Derrian Ford led Temple with 18 points.

Georgetown 79, Clemson 74: KJ Lewis scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half, Malik Mack had 16 points and seven assists, and the Hoyas won in Washington. Georgetown (4-0) improved to 2-0 in the series with Clemson (3-1) and 175-153 against the ACC.

Georgetown’s first lead of the second half didn’t come until the 14:33 mark on Mack’s 3-pointer to make it 51-48, and the Hoyas led the rest of the way. Carter Welling led Clemson with 14 points. Nick Davidson added 13 and Zac Foster 11.

No. 25 Kansas 76, Princeton 57: Flory Bidunga scored a career-high 25 points, hitting 10 of his 11 field-goal attempts, as Kansas (3-1)  beat Princeton (2-2) in Lawrence.

George Mason 61, New Hampshire 44: Dola Adebayo’s 14 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocks helped the Patriots (4-0) beat the Wildcats (2-3) in Fairfax.

Women

Virginia Tech 82, Coastal Carolina 59: The Hokies (4-0) beat the Chanticleers (2-3) at Cassell Coliseum. Carleigh Wenzel secured her first double-double of the season and the third of her career behind a season-high 23 points and career-best 10 assists.

Bryant & Stratton 75, Brunswick Community College 57: The Bobcats, ranked 23rd in National Junior College Athletic Association Division II, won their home opener in Atlantic Shores’ gym.

Sian Lewis had 19 points, four rebounds and two assists, Myla Parker scored 14 points and Sanai Johnson had 12 points for BSC.

William Peace 75, Apprentice 61: The Pacers (2-1) took control late in the second quarter at home in Raleigh, North Carolina.Zikira Henderson and Amiah Griffin scored 17 apiece for William Peace. Ronnice Berry led Apprentice (2-2) with 20 points, while Shilah-Ray Lord added 10.

Pfeiffer 80, Regent 43: The Royals (0-4) lost in Misenheimer, North Carolina, though freshmen Kennedy Shipman and Amara Groth finished with 15 points each. The Falcons (2-1) outscored Regent 30-2 in the fourth quarter and nearly got a quadruple-double from Miya Horton: nine points, nine steals, seven rebounds and eight assists.

Bridgewater 71, Christopher Newport 65: The Captains shot 35.6% and lost to the Eagles at the Bridgewater Invitational, though sophomore Madison McKenzie scored a career-high 19 points for CNU (2-1).

Sarah Pritz and Sydney Worsham each scored 10 for CNU, which led 48-36 before hitting a drought. Bridgewater moved ahead 71-59.

Riley Corcoran had 21 points and four steals for the Eagles, who overcame 31 turnovers. They received votes below the d3hoops.com preseason top 25, while CNU was ranked 20th.

Virginia Wesleyan 68, Marymount 54: Brianna Long had 28 points and 15 rebounds as the Marlins (3-0) downed the Saints in the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament. Also for VWU, Maesyn Blaylock had 12 points and five steals, and Jaiden Hunter had 11 points and eight rebounds.

VWU will play for the trophy at 3 p.m. Sunday against Washington and Lee, after Marymount faces Washington College of Maryland at 1 for third place.

No. 2 South Carolina 69, No. 8 Southern California 52: Joyce Edwards had 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Gamecocks beat the Trojans in a matchup billed as The Real SC at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Raven Johnson and Tessa Johnson scored 14 points each for the Gamecocks (4-0).

Kennedy Smith scored 12 points and Kara Dunn added 10 to the lead the Trojans (2-1), whose star player watched from the end of the bench. JuJu Watkins isn’t playing this season while rehabbing from a torn ACL sustained in the NCAA Tournament in March.

No. 3 UCLA 94, South Florida 61: Gabriela Jaquez scored 17 points to lead six UCLA players in double figures in the WBCA Challenge in Las Vegas as the Bruins shot 61%. Katie Davidson led USF (2-2) with 16 points.
