UVA hires ex-Wake staffer in personnel role

Coach Tony Elliott has announced the hiring of Cory Martin as Virginia’s Director of Player Personnel. Martin will fill the vacancy left by Justin Speros, who was promoted to Chief of Staff and Assistant General Manager in July.

Martin comes to Virginia after serving in the same role at Wake Forest under former head coach Dave Clawson. Martin will manage the evaluation process for high school athletes and prospective players in the transfer portal while working with the staff’s senior and regional scouts.

NSU’s Tracey takes MEAC specialist honor

Norfolk State punter Noah Tracey was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Specialist of the Week.He averaged 46.9 yards on seven punts, including a 65-yarder, and ranks fourth in the MEAC with a 39.9 average.

Former Old Dominion coach Bobby Wilder’s Tennessee Tech team stands eighth in both major FCS polls.

ODU, UVA to play noon games Oct. 25

Kickoff times and video coverage for some Oct. 25 games were announced Monday. Among them:Old Dominion’s homecoming game against Appalachian State will be at noon on ESPNU. No. 18 Virginia’s contest at North Carolina will be at noon on ACC Network.

Wake Forest’s Demond Claiborne, a King William High graduate, was named the ACC Running Back of the Week.

Menchville grad takes weekly ODAC award

Lynchburg midfielder Danielle Coon, a senior from Newport News’ Menchville High, was named the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week. She scored four goals for the Hornets, the No. 18 team in Division III, as they won 13-0 at Sweet Briar and 2-1 at No. 15 Shenandoah.

Coon leads the ODAC with nine goals and is second with 23 points.

2 Captains again take C2C awards

For the second week in a row and the third time this season, Christopher Newport swept Player of the Week honors in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference.

Outside hitter Samantha Dorn won the offensive honor. She had 20 kills, five aces and a .581 hitting percentage in victories over Salisbury and Randolph-Macon.

Middle blocker Alyssa Dozier took the defensive award. She had nine blocks (five solo) and 28 kills, moving her into 11th place on the Captains’ all-time list with 1,167.

Kellam, Landstown grads take conference honors

In women’s soccer, Randolph-Macon senior center back Abigail Pesut of Virginia Beach’s Kellam High was honored as the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week after a 2-0 shutout of Guilford and a 2-1 win over Lynchburg. Pesut scored with a header against Guilford for her second career goal.

In men’s tennis, Roanoke freshman Nolan Macedo, a Landstown High graduate, joined Federico Maccari as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Doubles Team of the Week.
