Virginia state Sen. Bryce Reeves has dropped his bid for the U.S. Senate.
The Spotsylvania County Republican announced his withdrawal Sunday on social media, saying because of family concerns, he would end his campaign to unseat Democrat Mark Warner. The former governor is seeking a fourth Senate term.
“Today, after prayerful reflection and conversations with my family, I am withdrawing from the U.S. Senate race,” Reeves wrote on the social media site X. “A serious family health matter and the realities of timing require my full attention at home. My faith and my family come first.”
Reeves, 59, launched his bid in late September, and was considered the GOP frontrunner in a primary field that included two others: Fairfax County’s Kim Farington and Reston’s David Williams, a Marine veteran. Reeves, a former Army ranger and narcotics detective, said he instead will seek to retain his state Senate seat.
“I remain fully committed to serving the citizens of Virginia’s 28th Senatorial District and look forward to seeking reelection to my Senate seat in 2027,” his post read. “My work continues in the General Assembly to … strengthen our economy, and ensure Virginia remains the best place in America for our military and veterans.”
Reeves noted a difficult election cycle for Republicans in which Democrats swept statewide contests in November, winning the governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general races, in addition to making significant gains in the House of Delegates.
“We must stop the infighting, regroup, and unite behind principled leadership worthy of our cause,” he wrote about his party. “I am grateful to every supporter and volunteer who stood with us.”
Warner, 71, announced his reelection bid early this month.
