Jaden Schutt hit six 3-pointers and scored 18 points to lead Virginia Tech’s 73-62 victory over previously undefeated George Mason on Saturday in Blacksburg.
Schutt, a backup guard, made 6 of 12 from deep in establishing a career high in 3-pointers. Amani Hansberry had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Hokies (8-2). Tyler Johnson scored 13 and Ben Hammond 10.
Kory Mincy had 16 points and eight assists for the Patriots (9-1). Riley Allenspach scored 11 points and Jahari Long added 10.
George Mason led 26-25 with five minutes left in the first half before the Hokies ended the half on an 18-4 run in which Schutt buried three 3s. Schutt made two more 3s shortly after halftime, and Tech led 60-37 a little more than five minutes into the second half.
The Patriots had started 9-0 for the first time in school history and were one of 15 remaining unbeaten teams nationally before Saturday.
George Washington 99, William & Mary 86: Jean Aranguren scored 20 points off the bench as the Revolutionaries (8-2) overcame the Tribe (8-3) at Smith Center in Washington, ending W&M’s six-game winning streak.
Aranguren also contributed five assists for GW, and Rafael Castro added 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
Kilian Brockhoff led the Tribe with 19 points and four assists. Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi added 13 points, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Cade Haskins had 12 points.
Christopher Newport 81, Southern Virginia 58: The Captains (7-2), led by Toa Hollenbeck’s 20 points, overcame the Knights (2-5) in Buena Vista. CNU outscored SVU 40-19 in the second half.
Virginia Wesleyan 71, Randolph 62: Amari Moorer led the Division III 13th-ranked Marlins (6-1, 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) with 22 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Omari DeVeaux added 16 points and five boards for VWU in its victory over the WildCats (3-5, 0-2).
Liberty 92, Coppin State 50: Brett Decker Jr.’s 20 points helped Liberty (6-2) defeat Coppin State (2-10).
Wake Forest 75, West Virginia 66: Juke Harris hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 28 points, Tre’von Spillers scored 16 and the Demon Deacons beat the Mountaineers at Holiday Hoopfest in Charleston, West Virginia.
Honor Huff led WVU (7-3) with 24 points, which included five 3-pointers.
Longwood 84, Morgan State 80: Johan Nziemi and Jacoi Hutchinson both scored 15 and Nziemi grabbed eight rebounds as the Lancers (6-5) beat the Bears (1-7) in Baltimore. Elijah Davis finished with 21 points and four assists for Morgan State.
Liberty 92, Coppin State 50: Brett Decker Jr.’s 20 points and JJ Harper’s 16 sparked the Flames (6-2), who led 55-14 at halftime in Lynchburg. Nelson Lamizana finished with 13 points for Coppin State (2-10).
NC State 75, UNC Asheville 63: Ven-Allen Lubin scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half in Raleigh and was 9 of 11 from the field for the Wolfpack (6-3), who snapped a two-game skid. Kameron Taylor had 20 points for the Bulldogs (4-5).
No. 10 Iowa State 81, No. 1 Purdue 58: Milan Momcilovic scored 20 points and Iowa State sank 11 3-pointers to propel to a dominant road win over Purdue.
Momcilovic, Killyan Toure and Joshua Jefferson all hit three 3-pointers. Toure scored 13, Blake Buchanan 12 and Jefferson 11 for the Cyclones (9-0). Iowa State shot 59% in the second half.
Braden Smith led Purdue (8-1) with 11 points, but the Boilermakers made only 4 of 18 3-pointers.
No. 2 Arizona 97, No. 20 Auburn 68: Koa Peat scored 18 points, Jaden Bradley added 16 and the Wildcats (8-0) romped at home. They won their first three games against AP Top 25 teams away from Tucson and made an emphatic statement with their first one at McKale Center.
The Wildcats shot 61% from the floor and had a 60-24 advantage in the lane over the Tigers (7-3) to make a case for the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25 following top-ranked Purdue’s loss to No. 10 Iowa State.
No. 3 Michigan 101, Rutgers 60: Morez Johnson Jr. scored 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting in Ann Arbor as Michigan (8-0, 1-0 Big Ten) won its fifth consecutive game by 25 or more points, dominating the Scarlet Knights (5-5, 0-2). The Wolverines scored more than 100 points for the third consecutive game, and Yaxel Lendenborg had 14 points and eight rebounds.
No. 8 Houston 82, Florida State 67: Emanuel Sharp scored 27 points, Kingston Flemings added 21 and the Cougars (8-1) won at home. Rodney McCray V scored 16 points for FSU (5-4).
No. 14 Illinois 75, No. 13 Tennessee 62: Tomislav Ivisic and Keaton Wagler each scored 16 points for the Illini (7-2) in the second part of Music City Madness in Nashville, Tennessee. The Volunteers (7-3) have lost three straight after going 30-8 last season and reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament.
No. 23 St. John’s 63, Mississippi 58: Zuby Ejiofor had a career-high eight blocks along with 15 points and nine rebounds, anchoring a strong defensive performance that carried the Red Storm (5-3) past the Rebels (5-4) at Madison Square Garden. Ejiofor scored all but two of his points in the second half of Ole Miss’ fourth straight loss.
Washington 84, No. 24 Southern California 76: The Huskies rallied from an 18-point, first-half deficit as Hannes Steinbach led Washington with 24 points and tied his career-high with 16 rebounds. The Huskies snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Trojans with their first win in Los Angeles since 2017. Chad Baker-Mazara scored 21 for USC.
No. 25 Arkansas 82, Fresno State 58: Darius Acuff Jr. scored 18 points for the Razorbacks (7-2) against the Bulldogs (6-4) in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
No. 4 Duke 66, No. 7 Michigan State 60: Cameron Boozer scored 18 points, including 16 in the second half, and Caleb Foster added 12 points to help Duke hold on for a road victory over Michigan State in a game that had the intensity of an NCAA regional final.
Boozer, who entered averaging nearly 27 points a game, also had 15 rebounds for the Blue Devils (10-0). Duke’s start is its best open to a season since winning the first 11 games in 2017-18.
Carson Cooper led Michigan State (8-1) with 16 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.
No. 6 Louisville 87, No. 22 Indiana 78: Ryan Conwell had 21 points and Louisville (8-1) turned a fast start into a victory over Indiana (7-2) in Indianapolis.
Conwell made a triumphant return to his hometown, where he starred at Pike High School. The senior point guard made three 3-pointers and went 10 for 11 at the free-throw line.
Boston College 67, New Haven 63: Reserve Fred Payne scored 18 points, former Landstown High star Donald Hand Jr. scored 13 points and Boston College (5-5) dodged New Haven’s upset bid, beating the visiting Chargers (5-5).
Georgia Tech 79, Monmouth 67: Lamar Washington and Kowacie Reeves Jr. each scored 23 points and Georgia Tech (6-4) finished strong to defeat Monmouth (5-5) in Atlanta and snap a three-game losing streak.
Miami 88, Southern Miss 64: Malik Reneau scored 21 points, Miami exploded for 54 points in the second half and the host Hurricanes (8-2) defeated Southern Miss (5-4).
