Virginia Wesleyan 76, Hampden-Sydney 66: TJ East scored a game-high 22 points and made 11 of 12 free throws to lead the Marlins to a come-from-behind Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory on the road.
Demeir Pollard added 20 points and made 7 of 8 foul shots for the Marlins (12-5, 7-1), who torched Hampden-Sydney 48-32 in the second half.
Travis Stickney scored 18 points and Shane Fernald 15 points to lead the Tigers (11-7, 5-4).
Women’s basketball
CNU 79, Southern Virginia 55: Madison McKenzie scored 21 points, many on drives to the rim, to lead five double-figure scorers in the Captains’ blowout victory at home. They’re ranked 21st in the Division III coaches’ poll.
CNU (16-3) gave up 11 straight points to fall behind 31-20, its largest deficit at the Freeman Center in a 62-game span since January 2019. But the Captains scored the final 10 points of the first half to make it 31-30, then outscored the Knights 49-24 in the second half — 41-16 since SVU’s final edge, 39-38.
McKenzie was joined in double figures by Mia Wilson (14 points), McKenna Snively (12), Elizabeth Creed (12) and Hailey Kellogg (11).
Ruth Kempler’s 18 points led SVU.
Virginia Wesleyan 70, Averett 62: Sydney Turner led four scorers in double figures with 16 points and made all 10 of her free throws as the Marlins (11-7, 5-4 ODAC) rallied in Danville.
Bre Robinson (15 points), Keira Bagwell (14) and Maesyn Blalock (10) also scored in double figures for VWU.
The Cougars (6-11, 2-7) led 35-30 at halftime and started the second half with an 8-2 spurt. But the Marlins responded with a 13-2 run and made crucial free throws late to hold on.
