JAMES CITY — A warning phase for James City County’s speed enforcement camera program will begin today.
The program will launch the 30-day warning period in seven school zones: Stonehouse Elementary, Clara Byrd Baker Elementary, Toano Middle, D.J. Montague Elementary, James River Elementary, Lafayette High and Norge Elementary. During the period, those suspected of speeding will receive a warning in the mail marked in red that shows the violation that occurred with the date and time. These warnings will not carry fines, but will serve as a reminder to slow down, James City County police said.
The police department announced last month that it would install automated speed cameras in the zones as part of a new speed enforcement program. The program was authorized last year by county supervisors in agreement with Blue Line Solutions. The program is designed to improve school zone traffic safety by using cameras to detect and cite speeding violations.
Live enforcement will start Oct. 8, when motorists who exceed 10 mph over school zone speed limits will receive begin receiving summonses in the mail. The citations will be civil, carry a fine and will not come with points against licenses or insurance penalties.
